A couple of new ads from The Lincoln Project. We now know through John Bolton’s book that Trump was trying to make deals with China. Not to benefit American workers, not to benefit American Farmers but to make a deal to aid Trump Monster in his re-election bid.
From Bolton’s Book
In their meeting in Osaka on June 29, Xi told Trump that the U.S.-China relationship was the most important in the world. He said that some (unnamed) American political figures were making erroneous judgments by calling for a new cold war with China.Whether Xi meant to finger the Democrats or some of us sitting on the U.S. side of the table, I don’t know, but Trump immediately assumed that Xi meant the Democrats. Trump said approvingly that there was great hostility to China among the Democrats. Trump then, stunningly, turned the conversation to the coming U.S. presidential election, alluding to China’s economic capability and pleading with Xi to ensure he’d win. He stressed the importance of farmers and increased Chinese purchases of soybeans and wheat in the electoral outcome. I would print Trump’s exact words, but the government’s prepublication review process has decided otherwise.
If true, Trump basically pleaded with Xi for help in winning reelection by buying up U.S. agricultural products. More recently, Trump spent weeks credulously propping up China’s assurances that it had coronavirus under control, to sustain his monstrous lie that we didn’t have to worry about it here. That downplaying on China’s behalf was also meant to preserve Trump’s trade deal with China. That’s not necessarily an objectionable goal, but now we see Trump explicitly tried to shape these dealings around his naked political needs as much as around what’s in the national interest, if not more so. If reality mattered, this would make it extremely hard for Trump to now argue that he’s tough on China and that Biden is soft. Trump has been making this claim in absurdly lurid ads that laughably rip Biden’s words out of context. There have also been other Trump TV spots that tell a convoluted story about Hunter Biden and China that is based on falsehoods and surely comes across as white noise to everyone except the hardest-core Trump supporters. Trump’s campaign manager floated the hashtag #BeijingBiden. On top of all that, vulnerable GOP senators are highlighting Trump’s supposed toughness on China over coronavirus (which, again, is the opposite of what happened) in order to deflect blame for Trump’s own catastrophic botching of it.
Use the link to read the rest of the analysis on the Washington Post, and it’s readily apparent that Trump and his cohorts including those in the Senate who let him skate on impeachment, have done damage to this country that may never get fixed. At the moment, I don’t see much reason for hope. The laziness and lack of intelligent thought processing in what has become the United States of Bigotry has taken over. The only hope to set it straight and escape the clutches of GOP tyranny is to throw the whole gang out on their ear.
The Lincoln Project is never to be caught napping and they weren’t today.
